Anemia occurs in animals when they have a lower than normal level of red blood cells (also referred to as erythrocytes) carrying oxygen to the body. Red blood cells contain a protein compound known as hemoglobin that gives blood its red color and transports oxygen to all the essential parts of the body. When there is a significant decrease in the number of red blood cells produced, the animal has to work extra hard to supply oxygen throughout the body. Animals with anemia have an increased heart rate which often causes fatigue, pale gums and depression.

Arthritis is a progressive disease and the simplest definition is inflammation of the joint. Any damage to the cartilage in the joint as well as the daily wear and tear that joints are subjected to during movement slowly destroys the thin layer of protective cartilage, and in response the body launches a reaction which leads to further cartilage destruction and inflammation. This is a classic no win situation and hence the progressive nature of arthritis.

Pets just like humans often develop bacterial infections, and if left untreated these infections can lead to more severe health complications.

Bad breath, otherwise known as halitosis is a very common condition that affects our pets at some point. Animals dont brush their teeth as we do so its not surprising that they may have rather stinky breath! For some animals, bad breath is a temporary and brief concern that may only arise at certain times of the day (such as on waking), or after eating pet foods. For other animals, bad breath is a more severe and persistent condition.

It is usually not necessary to bathe cats as a large part of their day is spent grooming themselves. They also hate water and are bound to put up quite a fight! Cats clean themselves with their barbed or coarse tongue, cleaning and licking dirt off their skin to remain clean. Very often cats do become quite dirty, especially if they have had a romp in the mud.

Your pets may love frolicking in the summer grasses, but this can mean exposure to wasps, hornets, biting insects and most commonly, bees. Most bee stings will result in localized pain to the affected area, slight swelling and mild redness. However, depending on the location of the sting (the throat and mouth may result in constriction of the airway) a bee sting may require prompt vet attention.

So your beloved pet has had yet another accident indoors perhaps its time to explore possible underlying problems that could be causing loss of cat or dog bladder control. Some bladder control problems are caused by serious conditions that need treatment, while others may be due to the age and temperament of your pet.

A bloated stomach for an animal could simply occur as a result of excess gas, fluid or foam, or it could be the result of a twisted stomach (volvulus) or blockage of the stomach valve which usually requires surgery. Most animals get bloated from too much food. However the condition referred to as bloat should always be treated by a veterinarian and is very serious.
